Otley is a thriving market town in West Yorkshire. It lies on the boundary between North and West Yorkshire and is situated in the beautiful countryside of Lower Wharfedale, yet it is only ten miles from Leeds. Steeped in history, Otley has much to interest the visitor including many events throughout the year to attract all the family.
Otley has a street market three times a week, a monthly Farmers’ Market, a wide range of specialist shops, award winning bakeries, butchers and chocolatiers as well as high street chains and three supermarkets. The high number of small independently owned businesses, pride themselves on their expertise, personal service and value for money. There are lots of excellent and welcoming tea rooms and bars offering a wide variety of local food and drink.
Otley Chevin is a prominent natural feature rising steeply above the town. The stunning views over the town and the glorious surrounding countryside are a wonderful sight. Open all year, the park is a unique countryside experience with facilities for walking, cycling, picnicking or simply enjoying the great outdoors.
The River Wharfe meanders its way through Otley. Alongside is Wharfemeadows Park, one of the most well-known and visited sights in Otley – with its beautiful gardens where you can take a leisurely walk, or just sit and watch the world go by. Other facilities in the park include one of the best children’s play parks in Leeds, a skate park, tennis courts and outdoor gym.
For cyclists, there are some great routes both on-road and mountain biking. Otley is home to Lizzie Armitstead, Olympic road race silver medallist at London 2012. The best of Britain’s racing cyclists come to Otley in June/July to take part in the Otley Town Centre Cycle races. These cyclists are the elite of British cycling who have helped to give the sport such a high profile in recent years, with previous competitors including: Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish. It is a hugely popular event which each year attracts thousands of visitors and it offers high quality free entertainment.
